I own one jimmy eat world CD. I am guessing that there aren't many people who like these bands on these boards, but yeah, it kinda makes me angry that people are that desperate for myspace plays. I would just do it myself, cut out the middle man.

The day after his death, souvenir tops with "I was at Glasto 09 when Jacko died" printed on them were already on sale around the site. In fact, when Jacko died, I was at home playing Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on a Nintendo DSi. I am 38 years old.

I like a few of those bands.

Most things to do with music or film make you angry imo

You don't think it's disingenuous to pay someone to add hits to their myspace?

yes, but I think anyone who listens to music based on how many other people have listened to it is hardly a discerning audience.

it probably helps them get recognition in the new media consumption environment that happens nowadays.

In reality it's no different to radio station DJ's getting paid to play what the record execs want them to play, but that bothers me as well.

Goosey, I see 'yer point and am slightly less outraged, but sort of pissy about it. I mean, not pissy in a "I really give a major crap" kinda way, but it's sad that this is what music marketing has come down to... Is there some kind of MySpace chart, like a "Most Plays This Week" chart that this would make a difference on?

KKK - as far as i know there is no chart, but i am surprised by this, and myspace should jump on that one.

If I was in a band, I don't think i would enjoy knowing we had to pay people artificially inflate song counts.

Then what does having the "most plays" in a week or whatev do, if there's no chart?

KKK - i'm no expert in anything, but it makes a band look more popular i guess, then they can write on their press release 'in the first month of putting our new songs up, we had 10,000 plays on our myspace...' etc

if they are unsigned, it makes them look like more people are interested in them despite any label push

if they are signed (which i think most of the bands on the list are) then it makes them look more popular i guess, thus making people think they should check em out, making even more hits etc.

I'd be interested to know if labels and/or people are influenced by this information.

i'd say possibly labels can maybe be swayed, which in turn sways people.

EG - arctic monkeys got their record deal after getting fuck load of myspace hits.

also lilly allen.

As far as I know, they don't pay marketing companies to artificially inflate their hits

Yeah, Lily Allen is a good example, though you'd think (or hope) that a label would be able to figure out if hits were getting artificially inflated before they threw a prospective band or performer a bone.

labels are probably the people paying the companies.

Not actually true, they didn't have an official myspace until after they got signed. It's a popular misconception though.
